National Insurance Number Update

We are pleased to inform you that the National Insurance office in the UK has now reopened following its closure in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Having a UK National Insurance Number (NIN) is vital for all assignees arriving in order to work in the UK, as a NIN is required to be able to open a local UK bank account.

In addition, without a NIN, assignees may find that they see larger deductions than they anticipate from their UK payroll, as UK employers will need to deduct emergency tax until a NIN is provided.

The office will be accepting new applications for National Insurance Numbers for EU Citizens who have either EU Settled Status or EU Pre-Settled Status only.

If you have yet to obtain your Settled or Pre-Settled Status, you have until the 30th June 2021 to apply and must have arrived in the UK before 31st December 2020. You can start your application for Settled or Pre-Settled Status at uk.homeoffice.gov.uk website.

To receive your application you will need to call the National Insurance office at 0800 141 2075 (this is a free phone number but some mobile providers may charge).

You will need to provide:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Permanent home postcode

The office is open between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Please note that due to the high volume of calls they are receiving, wait times are a lot longer than usual.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your Altair Global representative.
