Altair Global is known for many things in the relocation industry – our financial strength and stability, our industry-leading technology, and our outstanding service record. We work fervently to ensure sustainability is another differentiator. We are 100% committed to being good corporate citizens, and we’ve implemented the following initiatives to reduce our environmental impact and establish a culture of sustainability.
Corporate Social Responsibility Certification
We hold a certification based on our EcoVadis Corporate Social Responsibility (CSRP) rating, which is granted based on the policies, measures, and the reporting published by companies with regard to environmental, labor practices and human rights, fair business practices, and sustainable procurement issues. At Altair, we know that the world around us has a limited number of resources. Through our initiatives, we hope to reduce our waste and lay the foundation for a truly sustainable corporate culture.
The services that Altair provides are largely consultative and administrative – our largest direct environmental impact is our use of paper. To mitigate this use, we engage in a company-wide paper recycling program, and we encourage employees to avoid unnecessary paper consumption by a “think before you print” mentality. Most importantly, Altair’s secure web portal, STAR®, eliminates paper waste by providing our clients and their employees real-time data electronically.
The majority of reports and information that clients and transferees require can be accessed through this secure, password-protected website. As 86% of our clients use STAR for paperless authorizations and 95% access reports through STAR, this allows for a significant reduction in the volume of printed documents we must produce on a regular basis. Additionally, our international team is expanding their GROW database to include centralized digital document storage to drastically reduce the number of hard copy files maintained, and our accounting team is also altering their internal processes to reduce reliance on paper. We’re always on the lookout for ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and maintain a green mindset.
Altair has hardware recycling programs in place to combat the waste created by outdated equipment. Items that are reusable – and that were not used for storing data – are donated to the Dell/Goodwill Reconnect Program, and the resulting recycled materials are used to help further Goodwill’s job placement mission. Items that have contained / can contain data are submitted to Redemtech, Altair’s e-waste recycling partner, to be destroyed and the resulting waste is recycled. Altair’s toner cartridge vendor picks up and recycles or remanufactures all used toner cartridges. We also participate in Recycle to Eradicate Poverty by accepting used cell phones, PDAs, and ink cartridges for recycling; the proceeds from the recycled phones are used to finance microloans for female entrepreneurs in areas of Latin America.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
Over the past five years, we have been converting our data storage to a virtual network, using the technology to reduce our server hardware by 50%, and saving significant kilowatt hours of electricity. Our Dell desktop PCs are Energy Star and EPEAT certified and use 50% less energy than past machines. In addition to Altair’s internal steps, each of our office buildings was constructed with a number of “green” features. For example, our Pacific Service Center’s sustainability features start with a “cool roof” made from a roofing material that stays 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit cooler under direct sunlight than conventional roofing materials.
We are more than a global mobility provider. We are more than just our business. One of the most important aspects of Altair Global is our culture, and our culture is rooted not just in client service, but also in a mindset of service to our team members, community, and environment. It’s easy for companies to say that they’re service-oriented and focused on the community they live in, but Altair Global proves it. Team members are encouraged to volunteer, and hours donated to charitable organizations are not counted against work hours. In other words, no one has to take personal time to shop for our Salvation Army Angels or drop off their gifts.
To organize our company-wide charitable activities, a dedicated group called “Altair Cares” encourages fellow team members to get involved, facilitates company fundraisers, and boosts morale by sponsoring charity-focused lunches, celebrations, and contests.
Over the past year, this group has led the company’s charitable efforts and raised nearly two thousand dollars. Altair Care’s efforts support events that enhance our culture and help others, including an annual chili cook off in January and a Valentine’s Day bake sale. During the winter holiday season, the company adopted 124 “Salvation Army Angels” and 15 pets from the Humane Society. During the year, team members also supported local food banks, the Red Cross, and animal rescues.
